Aylesbury Opera presents a fully staged presentation of The Rake’s Progress by Stravinsky, with orchestra. There will be two performances: Friday 24th and Saturday 25th February 2023, 7.30pm at the Court Theatre, Station Road, Tring, HP23 5QY. The production will be conducted by Musical Director Sam Laughton, with stage direction by Louise Bakker.
When the mysterious Nick Shadow appears at his door, Tom Rakewell immediately abandons country life and his sweetheart Anne for the temptations of the city. But London’s glittering promise soon erodes. Love, money and even sanity slip further and further from Tom’s grasp. Can true love save him, or will the devil have the last laugh?
Inspired by Hogarth’s series of paintings, Stravinsky and his librettist W.H. Auden’s introduction of the Devil into the narrative begs the timeless question: to want extent is the individual responsible for his own downfall?
Performances will end at about 10pm. The theatre has a car park and disabled access.
